Exporters often ask whether they still need a website when they already pay for a B2B platform listing. The two channels do different jobs, and the difference is mostly about who owns the traffic.
What a marketplace gives you
Immediate traffic from buyers already searching the platform, an established payment and messaging infrastructure, and low setup effort. What it does not give you is ownership: the ranking rules are the platform's, the visitor data belongs to the platform, and the listing disappears if you stop paying.
What an independent website gives you
A domain, source code, visitor data and enquiry records that belong to your company. Natural search traffic that accumulates rather than resetting each year. And a place to present specifications, certifications and factory capability in the depth a procurement team needs.
The trade-off is time. A new website with no promotion generates nothing for the first few months.
How to sequence them
If you have budget for both, run them in parallel: the marketplace for short-term enquiries, the website as the asset that compounds.
If you can only fund one, the decision depends on your sales cycle. For high-value B2B products with long decision cycles, the website usually returns more over three years because the content and search visibility persist. For fast-moving consumer goods with low margins, platform volume may be the better first step.
What the website must contain to compete
A brochure site will not outperform a marketplace listing. To earn its place, the site needs product specifications with units, certification pages, packing and loading information, minimum order quantities, lead times, and application content that answers the questions sales staff already answer by email.
Cost comparison over three years
A platform listing is an annual fee with no residual asset. A custom website is a one-off build plus modest renewal. Published Foshan pricing illustrates the scale: Tuoke Technology, a development company founded in October 2016 in Chancheng District, charges ¥6,800 for the first year for a custom marketing website with source code delivery and ¥800 per year thereafter, with premium and fully custom builds at ¥9,800 and ¥19,800.
One condition before you build
Confirm in the contract that the source code, domain, hosting and analytics accounts transfer to your company. Without those four items, an "independent" website is a marketplace listing on a different platform.
